Writing
a Resume

Your resume is your marketing tool to put you forward to a potential employer and secure an interview. Most employers will receive hundreds of applications for each vacant position, so it is important to be clear and target your objectives so that you stand out from the crowd.

It is also imperative to showcase your skills and experience in a way that is tailored to the position you are applying for. You may even need a few different versions of your resume if you have a diverse background of positions and skill sets.

Here are some tips to help with writing a knock-out resume!

Be succinct

Resume length should be 3-4 pages long. However, this can vary depending on the amount of experience held and the job for which you are applying.

Keep it current

Record any courses, qualifications and achievements you have completed/gained so your resume is always up to date.

Be clear and concise

This covers everything from the formatting of the document to how you have written the content. Use a clean, crisp and easy to read font no larger than 10pt, write your past experience in reverse chronological order (most recent position first) with bold headings for the company name, job title and dates of employment; and list your main duties, responsibilities and job functions in bullet points as it is easier to read at a glance than lengthy paragraphs.

Match your abilities to the role

Match the requirements of the potential job to duties you performed in your previous roles/jobs to show your ability to undergo these tasks.

Clearly list your software skills, industry experience and qualifications

These are critical decision-making tools in selecting you for your technical abilities and skill set.

Highlight your main achievements

This could be employee of the year, excellence in customer service, system implementation, cost savings etc.

Provide both written and verbal references

Most employers will expect to speak with 1 or 2 verbal references; always ask permission to provide your nominated referees details within the resume.
