Writing a resume:
• Most employers may receive hundreds of applications for each vacant position
• Ensure your resume is tailored to the position you are applying for. Be clear and target your objective. You might even need a few different versions of your resume if you have a diverse background of positions and skill-sets
• Match the requirements of the job you are applying for. Provide examples of where you have performed these duties in your previous roles
• List your main duties/responsibilities/job functions in bullet points. Be succinct and specific. It is much easier to read than lengthy paragraphs. Allowing the reader to view important and vital information at a glance
• Highlight your main achievements. It could be cost savings, conversion of sales, streamlining, system implementation, employee of the year, excellence in customer service etc.
• List clearly your software skills, industry experience and qualifications – these are critical decision making tools
• It is imperative that you present your information concisely. Your resume should be easy to read, clear, concise and well formatted
• Use bold headings for the company name, job title and dates you worked there. Ensure your resume is set out starting with your most recent position running backwards
• Select a crisp, clean font – nothing too creative. Font size should be 10 point
• If you have worked for a number of years and do not want to disclose your age, it is not necessary to list your career in its entirety. However, we recommend you include a snapshot of previous positions and industries
• Resume length should generally be around two to three pages with a maximum of four
• Provide both written and verbal references. Most employers will expect to speak with one if not two verbal referees
• Your resume is your marketing tool to secure you an interview. Use it wisely!
